The necklace, consisting of 500 diamonds weighing in total 300 carats, returning to the 18th century, was sold for 4.8 million dollars at an auction held yesterday in Geneva. After payment of taxes and commissions, the total amount was 4.26 million Swiss francs.
This jewelry, which had been forgotten but preserved over the centuries, was described as a 'wonder'. The estimated price of the necklace ranged from 1.8 to 2.8 million dollars, but it was sold for a significantly higher amount.
The buyer, preferring to remain anonymous, submitted their bid by telephone and, according to the director of the jewelery department of Sotheby's auction house in Europe Andreas Wyeth-Corrial, it was 'extraordinarily fortunate'.
