Fire Damages Memorial for Crans-Montana Tragedy Victims

On Sunday, the memorial dedicated to the victims of the Crans-Montana tragedy, where 41 people died in a bar fire on January 1, also fell victim to the flames. Swiss media reported that the fire was caused by one of the many candles left at the site. The fire caused no casualties and only partially damaged the memorial. Swiss television RTS reported that the fire broke out around 6:00 AM on Sunday (5:00 GMT) and was quickly brought under control by firefighters. As often happens after tragic events, the memorial arose spontaneously: over several days, relatives of the victims, friends, and many other people left flowers, candles, and toys on the main street of Crans-Montana station, near the burned-down bar 'Le Constellation'. To protect it from the elements, it was covered with an igloo-shaped tent, which partially burned in Sunday's fire. After the fire, the tent had to be dismantled and some offerings removed, but authorities said the memorial would be rebuilt. There is also a book of condolences at the site that was not damaged, RTS reported.
